DESCRIPTION:
The Runway Extension project extended the runway 1800 feet to the north on the approach end of Runway 21 and included construction of a new 1000 foot safety area, new airfield lighting and electrical, new signage, grading and drainage improvements and relocation of utilities. Construction was completed in November 2007.
JUSTIFICATION:
The runway extension allows the airport to continue to fulfill its role in the National and State Aviation systems through enhancing the airport capacity to accommodate general aviation business jets as well as larger commercial service aircraft. As a result of the project, Horizon Air has initiated new air service between FLG and LAX with 76-seat Q400 aircraft. US Airways Express Airline is reducing their use of turboprop aircraft on their PHX route and will need to use more regional jet aircraft to accommodate increased passenger loads. Corporate customers are now able to purchase more fuel in summer months without being faced with weight-based density altitude restrictions. Safety has been enhanced for all aircraft activities.
