Annual Transportation Improvement Program Development Process starts at Flagstaff MPO

Flagstaff, AZ (February 6, 2014) – The Flagstaff Metropolitan Planning Organization (FMPO) announced the start of the Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Program (MTIP) development process for fiscal years 2015-2019. This federally mandated document identifies transportation construction projects and other uses of federal transportation program and transit funding in the Flagstaff Metropolitan region which extends from Kachina Village to Fort Valley and Bellemont to Winona.

The process concludes in June 2014. The primary focus is on year 2019. Secondarily, a review of current projects programmed in years 2015-2018 takes place. Each year the FMPO receives approximately $450,000 in general federal transportation construction funds and $500,000 in federal safety transportation construction funds. Agencies eligible to receive the funding include the City of Flagstaff, Coconino County, Arizona Department of Transportation, Northern Arizona University and the Northern Arizona Intergovernmental Public Transportation Authority. Examples of past projects include the paving of Silver Saddle Road, construction of bus shelters, and the installation of pedestrian count-down signals among many others.

The current FY 2014-2018 MTIP is available for review in the following locations:

Important dates include:

March 6, 2014 – Call for projects. The FMPO accepts requests for new projects.
April 3, 2014 – Public comment period. Draft TIP released. 30-day comment period.
May 1 and 25, 2014 – Technical Advisory Committee and Executive Board review
June 5 and 28, 2014 – TAC recommends and Board adopts final MTIP

Through this public notice, the Flagstaff Metropolitan Planning Organization is in compliance with Federal public review regulations for the projects listed in the MTIP. The Flagstaff Metropolitan Planning Organization is responsible for comprehensive transportation planning in the region extending from Bellemont to Winona and Sunset Crater to Kachina Village. Federal law requires that an MPO prepare a Regional Transportation Plan in order to receive federal transportation funding.
