Brownfield Land Recycling Program applied for EPA Site Specific Cleanup Grant
ARRA grant check 2009 BF Conf
The City of Flagstaff Community Design and Redevelopment Program had applied for a Brownfield Site Specific cleanup Grant through the Environmental Protection Agency. Grant monies will be used to clean up historic creosote contamination. The proposal was sent to the EPA in November, we recently just heard the good news.

The City of Flagstaff Brownfield Land Recycling Program is a successful stimulus funding grantee! $126,900 was awarded to the Brownfield Program for the cleanup of 116 West Phoenix Ave. Please read about the project here or check out the sound bite below.

EPA Awards Flagstaff $200K Brownfield Grant
The City of Flagstaff Brownfield Land Recycling Program has been awarded $200K from the EPA to assess lands impacted by the release of petroleum products.

The Route 66 Central Corridor Project will use these funds to develop an inventory of candidate properties, perform environmental assessments, and develop a geographic information system database.

The project encompasses the Southside and Plaza Vieja neighborhoods, and the industrial area between Route 66 and Butler Ave east to Enterprise Road (view PDF map).

City staff will work with interested property owners to determine if environmental concerns are present on their land and offer technical assistance in resolving problems. Project participants will be eligible to receive Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments free of charge, and be assisted with the sale and redevelopment of their properties. These costly investigations are the first step toward cleanup, and will pave the way for greater marketability and higher resale value of the property.

Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Awards Flagstaff $88,963 Grant
The City of Flagstaff Brownfield Land Recycling Program has been awarded $88,963 under the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality State Response Grant. These funds will be used to conduct Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments at the northwest corner of Phoenix Ave and Beaver St.

Historically, a power plant, railroad spur lines, a railroad storage yard, and a wood preservation vat occupied the property. The environmental site assessment will provide the City with a complete picture of the contamination that exists, and include recommendations for remediation.

This land will be part of the Rio de Flag Flood Control project that will remove several square miles of Central Flagstaff from the flood plain, catalyzing community investment in Downtown and the Southside neighborhood.

Once the Rio de Flag flood improvement project is complete, redevelopment of the property is envisioned as green space, a parking garage, and an open-air market.

For more information about the grant or the project please contact the Brownfield Specialist at (928) 213-3217.
