[ARCHIVED] City water update

Record setting snowfall and spring runoff have allowed Flagstaff Water Services to maximize surface water production from Upper Lake Mary (ULM) in 2023.

Over the last two weeks, some customers have noticed earthy/musty tastes and odors in water due to seasonal changes in ULM. Naturally occurring byproducts from algae are the source for these tastes and odors as they can be detected at very low concentrations.

Routine and supplemental testing of Flagstaff’s water confirms that the water is safe to drink and meets or exceeds all state and federal water quality standards. Flagstaff Water Services has taken measures to mitigate the effects of algae and will continue to do so until the aesthetic issue is resolved. These measures could take a few days to a week before taste and odors are minimized".
